The original video I had here is no longer available on YouTube, but I found a second Tarot episode from the same soap. The deck that appears in this episode (see first 2:30 minutes) is the Sacred Circle Tarot by Anna Franklin and Paul Mason (Llewellyn). Kevin, the disgruntled querent, says to the reader: “Maybe you should try to predict more cheerful futures . . .”
The video I posted earlier featured the Enchanted Tarot from Amy Zerner and Monte Farber.

Rats! Couldn’t name the deck! But I saw the back image, so I am going hunting. What fun!

I don’t think I know that particular deck. However, I noticed that Opal on All My Children uses the Rider Waite deck quite often 🙂

It appears to me to be the large Rider-Waite edition of the cards, as the cards chosen were obviously chosen because of their large size as opposed to the regular size which would not be as effective on a television screen. It was hard to see the cards clearly, and I am not sure the book that was being read from, is even the one that would go with the Rider-Waite deck or any other deck. The book may have just been a prop, and the dialogue and interpretation written for the script only. The book did not look familiar to me. I await the day when Tarot Cards can be appreciated above the level of a soap opera with surface level romances than can not even live up to the standards of Grace Livingston Hill and her very successful line of Romance novels!

Bummer that she’s shown consulting a book … makes me think of running to the LWB after every card – so much is missed that way …

The Magician, the Fool and the High Priestess right off the top of the deck? I think she needs to shuffle the deck some more. I have no idea what deck this is…

Kimber, I think you got it! I’m pretty sure it’s the Enchanted Tarot. You can see the backs here:

While we’d all like to see a more sophisticated portrayal of a tarot reading, I think it helps people know that they can look up things in a book. It’s probably how most of us started.
Julie – interesting observation about the cards mentioned. Sorta archetypal, huh? So, is the reader the Empress?

Monte Farber
Hi Mary and Julie, Monte Farber here. It was great seeing you both at the October Bay Area Tarot Symposium. Kimber (good eyes!) is correct, they’re using my Enchanted Tarot book and the cards are The Enchanted Tarot deck, reproductions of the 78 3′ X 2′ fabric collage tapestries done by my wife, Amy Zerner. It’s been out since 1990 but we’ve just learned that it may go out of print, so if you want to add “The Enchanted Tarot” book and deck to your collection you should do so at your earliest convenience.
Of course, what the actors are saying is not in the book, they’re just using the tarot reading to advance their story line. Amy and I are delighted that they used our book/deck set. It’s good for all of us to have tarot portrayed as something valuable and useful and fun.

Monte – I really enjoyed getting to hang out with you and Amy at BATS. Hope to see you at Readers Studio or elsewhere. Years ago I saw some of Amy’s originals for the cards. They were stunning! While beautiful as cards, the fabric collages with additional lace and jewel embellishments are breathtakingly exquisite.
Interesting to know that the TV show made up it’s own supposed text for the book. Still, they weren’t that far off.

Tarot readings are few and far between on TV and in movies. Thanks for sharing this one.
By the way … Did you know that a Tarot Reading is an integral part of the premise of the new TV show, “The Ex List”?
See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ex_List#Plot
By the way, my husband, Wil Bowers, is appearing on the show scheduled for this coming Friday, Oct. 24th … He is playing Marcus, the business handler of Bella’s “surfer dude” ex-boyfriend, Shane (Brian Van Holt). The show is at 9pm on the West Coast… check listings or cbs.com elsewhere.

Can’t help being pleased that the deck I just saw them using was the Sacred Circle…a deck that I have been using for about 10 years now…:D
