Not everyone knows that tarot appears to have originally been created as a trick-taking game related to whist or bridge. It is still played today on the European continent, where it is called Le Tarot in France, Tarocchi in Italy and Tarock (or some variation of that) in Eastern Europe. Most people play with a specially designed double-headed deck with French suit markers and completely different trump illustrations featuring large numbers on them, as these decks are more conducive to game-playing (see here and here). You can learn more about the game at Tarocchino.com, which is the source of the following excellent video on the history of tarot and gaming. See also John McLeod’s website on Card Games, especially Tarot Games. You can download a reasonably priced shareware computer version of this game (with free trial period) in English or French for both Mac and PC at LeTarot.net. I’ve posted simplified instructions for playing the game here.

A very popular version of this kind of deck is the one that features the French comic character Asterix, very popular in Europe:

Thank you, Mary! Especially for the great video which, I agree, is an excellent synopsis. I was particularly pleased to see the author debunk yet another tarot myth, one that is still being circulated even by those who claim to be otherwise “myth free”––namely, that the Roman and Protestant Churches outlawed and/or persecuted the users of tarot cards during the early centuries of their use. Except for the odd late medieval monkish sermon decrying not tarot, but card playing which, like dicing and other forms of gambling, was considered a waste of time that might have been better put to practicing the virtues, there is simply no evidence of any kind of general ecclesiastical persecution. By the time the cards were being used for occult purposes, including divination, the western Churches no longer had the power to convincingly proscribe the cards or persecute their users. Not an apologist for Christianity here, just for “good” history.

David,
Thanks should be given to the unidentified creator of Tarocchino.com for the video, book of game instructions, and example decks at his site.

webyazilim – There is no Death card in most modern decks designed specifically for playing the game of Tarot or Tarock, although it is possible to play the game with one of the decks based on the original Italian design.
