On September 3, 2008, the Seattle Weekly printed a story regarding a county agency discriminating against a Tarot card reader who wished to offer her services for a charity event.
The American Tarot Association (ATA) has issued a response in the form of a letter to King County Executive Ron Sims, along with a Press Release regarding the discriminatory actions of the King County Solid Waste Division.

We (the ATA) actually sent the letter to more than Ron Sims. I saw Earthshod post about this on LJ and was appalled. We’ve been working on a standardized press release our members can use and we will try to keep an eye out for this sort of thing. I hope folks will let the ATA know so we can at least continue trying to educate.

I should mention that the county may very well have the right to refuse to have a tarot reader since they also turned down some other kinds of services. However, this is an opportunity to educate the public about tarot.
It was stated that fortune-telling was not appropriate to a Christmas event. I would like to point out that fortune-telling has long been one of the traditional activities in a great number of countries that people indulged in over the Christmas and New Year holidays. Additionally, injunctions against cards were often relaxed for this season. Historically, they’re both part of the holiday spirit.
