Exciting News! U.S. Games has announced a new tarot deck set celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the Rider-Waite Deck, and honoring the artistry of Pamela Colman Smith. Read my review here.
The deluxe set will include the Smith-Waite Centennial Tarot Deck (reproduced from the original 1909 deck – hey, it’s about time, thank you very much!) and two books:
- The Artwork and Times of Pamela Colman Smith, by Stuart R. Kaplan, with over one hundred examples of her non-tarot art.
- The Pictorial Key to the Tarot by Arthur Edward Waite, in a new format.
The set also includes two prints of Pamela Colman Smith, one photo and one self-portrait, both 5” X 7” suitable for framing; six color postcards of artwork by Pamela Colman Smith; and Spread Sheet Guide. Everything is attractively packaged in a deluxe keepsake case. Price: $35.00
I believe it is expected for May 2009 unless there are delays. See the U.S. Games promotional information here.

Hey, Mary!
Great news … though I think you meant “expected for May 2009” — since a May 1909 release date would make the tribute deck as old as the original Rider-Waite! 🙂
Keep up the great blogging! I really enjoy your site.

I’m very excited about this! It’s wonderful to see Pixie getting recognition. Thank you for always sharing news and information with us Mary. The website is great, and I re-read ‘Women of The Golden Dawn’ over and over. And hey, I would have loved to have been there for the 1909 release if US Games could manage that.
bright blessings – Marisa

Great new – and at last Pixie gets the recognition she deserves not behind those “gentleman” Mr. Rider (who did nothing except being the publisher) and Mr. waite, who only was responsable for the esotheric framework and the intellectual structuring.
The ART and visualisation of all that was Pam’s great work – still standing strong after 100years

I always felt that Pamela Colman Smith is the main reason the RWS deck is still alive. Without her visual magic you’d just have an overly intellectual old man pontificating. Maybe that’s too harsh, but I don’t know. *And* the original 1909 deck! I’m definitely getting this one!

Oh my God(s)! We have been talking about doing a “Centennial Tarot” deck, to commemorate the RWS 100 year anniversary, at The Tarot Guild for a couple years now! It’s not exactly what we had in mind, but close enough.
We were looking at a re-envisioning of P.S.’s artwork….what would she have come up with if she was creating the art today? We are also thinking of a modernization of “Pictorial Key”.
I have always preferred the WS Deck to others, but wished the images were more “modern”. (..and I’m NOT talking about yet “another” RWS clone, but the same images and symbols, just re-envisioned). That would be the “perfect” deck for ME. The closest I have seen is The Llewellyn Deck. Although the Majors are entirely different (from Welsh mythology…I’m part Welsh, so it’s fine with me ;-), the minors are very close, just much “better on the eyes”.
I was wondering if someone was going to “beat us to the punch”. But we will first have to see the deck. Our idea may be quite different from what US Games is going to put out. I’m also curious about the “new format” for “The Pictorial Key”….
Well….can’t wait to see it~!
Live in abundant possibility…

This one has just made it to the top of my ‘must have’ list. It is because of Pamela Coleman-Smith’s images that the RWS has always been my favourite. Can’t wait!
