Melissa Weiss Steele’s Oracle of Initiation is a 66 card oracle deck, which, as Steele says, “speaks directly to the instinctual and archetypal impulses within the psyche.” Following the sudden death of her husband and a descent into despair, Steele began a journey of initiation and renewal by exploring alone the ancient desert landscape around Santa Fe, New Mexico. Merging with the land, she stripped off the trappings of civilization, painted herself with mud and took thousands of photographic self-portraits holding her camera at arm’s length, which she calls The Painted Body series. Slowly, she discovered the camera’s ability to capture movement and light emanations that echoed her own experience of the spirits and Ancestors of these places. None of these photographs have been altered or retouched in any way.
While the tarot is often described as the soul’s journey, the Oracle of Initiation, on the other hand, offers a journey of the Spirit. The images are haunting, spellbinding, intoxicating, instinctual. When working with them, you enter the immediacy of a timeless Now. Although solitary musings, they resonate with all our relations. Although seemingly personal, they touch both the ancient and universal in each of us. They are an eloquent reminder that the earth is Spirit-embodied and we are one with it. You can see a video deck review and sample reading at Donnaleigh’s blog.
Melissa asked a number of people to write their own impressions of selected cards for inclusion in the text to accompany the decks. This is what I wrote about the two cards I chose:
10 – Preparation
She stands at a threshold outside the cave entrance—womb of the mother. She sniffs dry dirt. Worshipful of opposites, she sees herself reflected in stone—blue darkness to golden light. She places her hand upon the rock, asking permission of the stone people before entering. She waits patiently for an answer. She wills the thrumming heartbeat of the ages to greet her with a pulse. She lets go of everything that came before. Touching stone, she waits for secret signs, a touchstone. She becomes rock, to enter rock.
It is important in the early stages to listen and feel if the way is clear, if the timing is right, if the self is properly attuned. When rocks, caves and minerals are the initiators—the doorkeepers—then one must prepare by slowing down, becoming solid as rock. True happiness is found in preparing well. Freedom is here for the asking. There is no turning aside, no time for impatience. Make ready, for Mystery lurks around the corner.

29 – Resonance
Eyes blindfolded, she goes deep within. Blue, new-moon throat chakra oversees a jeweled doorway, entrance to the inner light. Oh, to receive the message of the midnight sun! Vibration takes over. Sightless knowing that surrenders to not-knowing.
When one resonates deeply in sympathy with another or, even more, with the state of the world, an underlying meaning emerges in voiceless sound so intense it is beyond hearing. It bursts forth in radiant light: lash-light gleaming tears, electric brain-waves, an oscillating ruff leaving a luminous wake.
This is the sensation of wordless empathy—of feeling with others—before you even recognize what it is. Don’t look at the distracting particulars. Turn away. Reflect on it in humility. The cries of millions are a jewel. Hold it close. Become it. This is a compassion, a dark beauty, that makes waves.

I find this a very evocative set of cards, too, Mary. A couple of my students really enjoy pulling one and we spend time with it, associating and making personal connections. Once in a while I pull one to inspire my journal writing so that I go to places I might not otherwise go. It’s a powerful non-tarot deck and Melissa is a courageous and empowered woman.

James – I stand in awe of Melissa. She regularly does what I’ve only dreamed of doing. I also agree that this deck can take you places you might not go otherwise. Plus, each card can appear so different in different contexts.

Mary, if you could do any one thing (in your own way, of course) that Melissa has done, what might it be?

Ah, James. I’d love to be on an initiatory journey, naked and alone in the SW desert.

Melissa’s deck is an initiation into the realms of our own primal, instinctive nature.

Seems like an exploration of her shadow self…Highly personal but not really archetypal in my eyes

Mary, your words captured the feelings and energy with perfection. I’m moved! I have lived in the Arizona Sonoran Desert area since 1960 and have spent much time alone in the desert. Not physically naked, but spiritually naked. This was why I was so drawn to Melissa’s imagery when I saw it in the Tarosophist International magazine. Once the Desert is absorbed in your bones, you can never leave. I am looking forward to this book!

Vicki – You wrote about the deck that “For me it is not archetypal but personal.” You know, that was my first impression. I thought, “Beautiful, but its someone else’s stuff.” (I often feel that way about modern decks.) Then, I started working with the Oracle. At first it was with a group. I was blown away by what people were seeing, as well as the insights I got into my own life. As I worked with the cards, I’ve found that they truly evoke powerful things in me, and I am grateful for that. They work differently than do tarot cards and the focus is much more shamanic and spiritual rather than mundane. Also, only some of the cards seem like shadow energy to me, and they are more inner than outer.
I’m sure these cards work very differently for different people, and certainly not everyone is going to want to work with this deck.

Mary, I especially love your words for Preparation! I am another proud contributor for this project. I have worked with the deck since last May, and it certainly took me to unexpected places both within and outside myself. All exercises I have done with it so far have been incredibly rewarding. Kudos to ta truly inspiring artist and spiritual explorer!

You could be right Mary. I have been disappointed in other Oracle decks I have purchased( Anubis Oracle, sacred Geometry Cards, Fifth Element Tarot) and this probably colors my view. I am very attached to the Rider-Waite and Rider Waite clones after 43 years with them. .

Linda – Thanks for stopping by. It’s wonderful to hear a mother be so in tune with and appreciative of a child’s life path!
Vicki – I’m a Rider-Waite-Smith girl, myself. Working with an oracle sometimes frees me up to work in fresh ways.

Wow. That is all I can say. I was in the cave for seven years after Chris died. It was a very lush and productive cave, but also a very heartbreaking and shattering cave. I believe we teach what we need to learn, and I needed to find the power and blessings in change. I call it “Rainbows in the Dark” in the Oracle deck, it is the process of claiming the sacred gifts and passion available through redefining your greatest struggles and initiations. I had to do that, and that is where the deck emerged from.
I hear what Vicki is saying, and what I truly found in creating the deck was a level of humility, faith, and “becoming other” that erases any fears this Leo had about it being self-absorbed. I see the deck as mirroring each of our multidimensionality, the truth of our divine illumination, incarnate.
And as to my mother, such an incredible blessing to be seen and honored by her. She immersed me in beauty growing up, and is one of my greatest inspirations for dedicating your life to art and creativity. This Christmas she BLEW MY MIND by mirroring my path. One of the images in the album she sent me is of cute cute 1960’s her with her perfect little bob-do and a smart little coat holding me swaddled in a white blanket.
The location of my newborn photo shoot is UNDER A BRIDGE WITH GRAFFITI!!!!!!!!!! My destiny was orchestrated, as I believe yours is if you can claim the gifts in the initiations. If you do not know, The Oracle of Initiation was primarily created down in graffiti tunnels, Rainbows in the Dark. so..I have rambled on, blessings on all our sacred work and getting out of the way to embrace our brilliance. And Mary, come play on the land with me! xoxx MelissaBee

Mary thank you for featuring Melissa’s courage-charged oracle. Your card descriptions read like invitations to a dance that I wouldn’t want to miss! I’ve been privileged to witness Melissa respond to the ‘call of creation’ and have felt great inspiration from her deck. Whenever I use it, and especially in group settings, a sense of wonder to explore what it is to be in an ecstatic state takes hold and sweeps the imagination into such possibilities. Imagine going into nature, stripping from the everyday wardrobe and adorning your body with earthen paints, jewels that chime, and of course aspects of the self that hold us back from such adventures. Melissa’s deck invites this type of exploration and I am forever grateful to have the Oracle of Initiation to facilitate my divination dance.
